The Longbottom Family
Longbottom, Alice Longbottom, Alice
Alice Longbottom was a member of the original Order of the Phoenix along with her husband, Frank, who was also an Auror. They had already thrice defied Voldemort and thus their son, Neville, was eligible to be the one prophesized to defeat the Dark Lord. Thankfully, he ended up not being the one, but just as they were beginning to feel safe after Voldemort’s disappearance, Frank was attacked. He was tortured for information on Voldemort’s whereabouts by Bartemius Crouch Jr., Bellatrix, Rabastan and Rodolphus Lestrange. Then they proceeded to torture Alice to the point of insanity. The Longbottoms were very popular so their torture caused a fury that put the Ministry under great pressure to catch the culprits. The Cruciatus Curse left such lasting damage that Frank and Alice will likely spend the rest of their lives in St. Mungo’s, effectively leaving their son an orphan. They now reside at the far end of the Janus Thickey ward. Neville and Frank’s mother visit during holidays, but they can no longer recognize them. However, whenever Neville comes by, Alice likes to give him a Drooble’s Blowing Gum wrapper. She does not realize that it is worthless, but Neville appreciates it nonetheless.

Longbottom?, Algie Longbottom?, Algie
Algie is the Great Uncle of Neville Longbottom. When Neville was young, Algie was afraid that Neville had no magic in him, so he tried to scare some out. Algie pushed him off the end of Blackpool pier, nearly drowning the poor boy, and then dropped him out of a window. Luckily, his magical abilities finally showed and Neville bounced out of harm’s way. Algie bought him a toad as a reward. He is fond of meringue.

Longbottom?, Enid Longbottom?, Enid
Enid is the wife of Algie and the Great Aunt of Neville Longbottom.

Longbottom, Frank Longbottom, Frank
Frank Longbottom was an Auror and a member of the original Order of the Phoenix. He and his wife, Alice, had thrice defied Voldemort and thus their son, Neville, was eligible to be the one prophesized to defeat the Dark Lord. Thankfully, he ended up not being the one, but then Frank was attacked after Voldemort’s fall from power, just when everyone thought they were safe. He was tortured for information on Voldemort’s whereabouts by Bartemius Crouch Jr., Bellatrix, Rabastan and Rodolphus Lestrange. Alice was also tortured when he did not respond satisfactorily. The Longbottoms were very popular so their torture caused a fury that put the Ministry under great pressure to catch the culprits. The Cruciatus Curse did such extensive damage that Frank and Alice will likely spend the rest of their lives in St. Mungo’s, effectively leaving their son, Neville, an orphan. They now reside at the far end of the Janus Thickey ward. Frank’s mother and son visit during holidays, but they can no longer recognize them.

Longbottom, Mr. "Grandad" Longbottom, Mr. "Grandad"
This is the father of Frank Longbottom, grandfather of Neville Longbottom and husband of Augusta. Died sometime during Neville’s childhood.

Longbottom, Mrs. Augusta "Gran" Longbottom, Mrs. Augusta "Gran"
Augusta Longbottom is the mother of Frank and grandmother of Neville. She is a formidable-looking woman with a rather bony nose and likes to wear a pointed hat decorated with a stuffed vulture on top. She wears long dresses and gloves and carries a huge, crimson handbag. Augusta can be pretty hard on Neville, because she wishes he were more like his father, who had been a popular Auror before being tortured to the point of insanity. The way she raised and treats Neville is not very positive and may even border on passive verbal abuse. While it is understandable that she misses her son, she should be proud of her grandson, who is quite a good person in his own right. Her criticisms likely do more harm than help. Augusta is starting to appreciate him more as Neville grows into his own, though she still tends to hold him to certain standards. She claims that Charms is a soft subject, leaving out the fact that she failed her own Charms O.W.L. However, Augusta is for the most part a good witch; she supported Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter when the Daily Prophet was slandering them. She is a friend of Griselda Marchbanks.

Neville Longbottom was born in late July of 1981 to Frank and Alice Longbottom. His time of birth and parentage qualified him as a possible candidate in the prophecy made about the Dark Lord. Luckily for him, Harry Potter became the chosen one instead. However, he was not unscathed by the war what with his father having the dangerous job of being an Auror. After Voldemort disappeared, Frank was tortured for information on his whereabouts by Bartemius Crouch Jr. and the Lestranges. When Frank would not or could not tell them anything, they tortured his wife too. Both are now at St. Mungo’s, insane from prolonged exposure to the Cruciatus Curse. Neville never really knew them, as he was only an infant at the time.

Neville was raised by his grandmother and presumably his grandfather, before his death. For a long time, his family was afraid that Neville was a Squib because he had not shown any signs of magic. They would test him by putting him in danger, but nothing happened until he was eight years old. His Great Uncle Algie dropped him out of an upstairs window, but Neville just bounced down the road. They were very pleased when he got into Hogwarts.

Sadly, Neville’s Gran misses her son so much that she often takes it out on Neville. It would be nearly impossible for him to live up to his father, who died courageously. Unfortunately, his Gran wants nothing short of him being exactly like his father, even to the point of making him use Frank’s old wand. The consequence of this is extremely low self-esteem for Neville. He stumbles through most of his classes because he is so nervous about messing up. Though he found that he had an affinity for Herbology. He can also be quite forgetful. Still, he was put into Gryffindor house for a reason. In his first year, he stood up to his friends (Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley) in hopes of stopping them from getting in trouble. As he became better friends with them, Neville got more involved and determined to improve his defensive skills. Being a member of the DA helped very much. By his fifth year, he had the courage to stand with Harry and fight Death Eaters at the Department of Mysteries, suffering a broken nose in the process. It also gave him a chance to see Bellatrix Lestrange, the woman who tortured his parents to the point of insanity, face to face. Since he could not speak properly with his broken nose, Neville was unable to carry out revenge; it merely gave Bellatrix the opportunity to Crucio him as well. However, the bravery of being at the battle was not lost on his Gran. She was not even upset that he had broken his father’s wand. The following year, Professor Slughorn invited Neville to the first Slug Club meeting on the train. When Death Eaters invaded Hogwarts at the end of his sixth year, Neville once again stood alongside his friends and the Order of the Phoenix. Despite being injured in the battle, he still tried to follow the Death Eaters up the Astronomy Tower only to be thrown back by a magical barrier. Neville and Luna Lovegood had been the only ones to respond to the call for help as the DA had meant the most to them.
